2012 GEAR GUIDE: AMERICAN-MADE VELOCITY RIMS

Velocity announced this week that they will be moving production from Australia to the good ol’ U.S. of A. This is pretty big news considering that (as of February 2012) Velocity rims will be the ONLY aluminum rims made in America. I’m stoked to get a pair of U.S.-made A23’s!

From Velocity’s press release:
« Tom Black, the founder of Velocity, will be relocating from Australia to Florida where he will continue to oversee rim production at Velocity’s new manufacturing factory. Velocity’s distribution center will continue to operate out of Grand Rapids, Michigan as it has since 1992 and become their worldwide headquarters; with the Australian facility remaining as a distribution center for the Asian and Australian markets. »

The final race of the 2011 Velo City Tour!

« Over six years Velo City has rocked nine U.S. Velodromes and sent a total of 24 North American Bike Messengers to the Cycle Messenger World Championships. This year we are proud to deliver two of North America’s best to Warsaw, Poland for the 19th Annual CMWC. »

THIS WEEKEND AT DORAIS PARK VELODROME

The 2011 Velo-City Tour kicks off in Detroit with the Thundrdrome II event. Bicycle messengers will be competing to go to the finals in NYC and a chance to compete in the Cycle Messenger World Championships in Warsaw.

Of course there will also be non-messenger bike races, scooter races, moped races and tons of fun for spectators. Check out the event details at the Thunderdrome website.

VELO CITY TOUR 2011 

Get excited for VeloCity touring around the country again this year. Track races for the fastest messengers and urban cyclists presented by Cyclehawk.

I’m sad to see that they aren’t doing Los Angeles this year. But who knows? Maybe they’ll add in another stop.

Downtown’s Finest is hosting a fund raising event for this past years Los Angeles edition of the Velocity Tour 2010.

Some sponsors fell short, so we’re having this race to help complete the purchase of his round trip flight to this years North American Cycle Courier Championships, being held in Atlanta, GA.

(His flight may leave Thursday, October 7)

You can thank Encino Velodrome for charging messengers two dimes ($2,000) to race. [This is the race organizer’s opinion — not a fact until I hear otherwise -K]

This weekend at Hellyer Park Velodrome!

VeloCity Tour hits The Bay Area featuring track races for messengers and urban cyclists! Messengers will be competing for airfare to the 2010 Cycle Messenger Worlds Championships in Guatemala.

The competitions will be in an “omnium” format. The track races will be:

5 -up chariot heats — a standing start one lap race, winner goes to final, 2nd to rep round

20 lap scratch — after 20 laps the first one across the line wins

Miss and out — every lap the last rider to cross the line gets pulled from the race until we have 5 left and then there’s a 3 lap race for first through fifth

20 lap Point-a-lap — every lap a point is awarded for the leading rider to cross the line. The rider with the most points at the end wins.

Australian Pursuit — riders are spaced equally around the track and the race starts from a standing start. The objective is to pass all the people in front of you and not to get passed yourself. Once you are passed you are out of the race.
