OLYMPICS: WOMEN’S TEAM PURSUIT

At this point it becomes pretty clear which country will “win” the Olympics in track cycling. The British team of Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell broke the World Record three times — in the qualification round, then again in the first round heat against Canada and one more time in the final heat against USA. The new World Record stands at 3:14.051 (previously it was 3:15.720 set by the same team at World Championships this year).

GOLD — Great Britain (Dani King / Laura Trott / Joanna Rowsell)
SILVER — United States (Sarah Hammer / Dotsie Bausch / Lauren Tamayo)
BRONZE — Canada (Tara Whitten / Gillian Carleton / Jasmin Glaesser)

OLYMPICS: MEN’S TEAM PURSUIT

Okay I’ve been on a camping trip over the weekend so I was barely able to watch any more of the Olympic track cycling events. With the last few medals being awarded today, I’ll just post some quick recaps…

Great Britain’s Team Pursuit squad of Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh broke their own World Record timing twice — once in qualifying and then again in the final heat against Australia. The new record stands at 3:51.659 (formerly 3:53.295 set by Great Britain at World Championships earlier this year).

GOLD — Great Britain (Edward Clancy / Geraint Thomas / Steven Burke / Peter Kennaugh)
SILVER — Australia (Jack Bobridge / Glenn O’Shea / Rohan Dennis / Michael Hepburn)
BRONZE — New Zealand (Sam Bewley / Marc Ryan / Jesse Sergent / Aaron Gate)

TRACK WORLD CUP: BRITISH TEAM PURSUIT

This is an amazing photo from the Track World Cup in Manchester. The photographer (Tom Jenkins) uses an off-camera flash pointing back towards the camera to freeze the subject and a slow shutter speed of 1/4 sec at F16 to blur the other cyclists.

1993 World Championships - Men’s Team Pursuit

Australia vs. Germany in this great Team Pursuit final. Awesome rides on both sides but there can only be one winning team.

The Team Pursuit is a 4km (16 laps on a 250m track) race where two teams of four start on opposite sides of the track. The teams chase each other around the track, exchanging in the turns so that each rider takes turns in the wind. The race is won when won team catches the other or whichever team completes the distance first. The time is taken on the 3rd rider across the line.

The European Track Championships are starting tomorrow and all the Euro cycling teams are converging on the BGZ Arena in Pruzskow, Poland. A good opportunity to spot some tasty track bike pr0n like these BH pursuit bikes for the Spanish pursuit team.

Wiggo’s Back On Track!

Everyone’s favorite mod cyclist, Bradley Wiggins, announced that he will be returning to the velodrome for the UCI World Cup in Manchester this February. He hasn’t been competing on track for the past couple of years but he’ll be shooting for the Team Pursuit event at the 2012 Olympics. Says he, “With the Olympics being in London - potentially my last Olympics, I don’t know - it will be a fantastic way to finish. To get another gold medal there in the team pursuit, will be the goal now for us.” Good to have you back, Wiggo!
