WORLD CHAMPS: MARTYN IRVINE WINS GOLD FOR IRELAND
Ending with the most exciting ten laps in this year’s UCI World Championships so far, the men’s Scratch Race was won by Ireland’s Martyn Irvine today. The winning move was made when Irvine attacked with 10 laps go and held off the field until the end (skip to about 2:38 in the video to see the attack). It was an amazing feat especially considering that he rode to a silver medal in the Individual Pursuit less than an hour before the start of the Scratch Race.
Until today, it had been 117 years since Ireland has won a medal in track cycling. On top of that, it was announced earlier today that Belfast and Dublin would be hosting the opening stages of next year’s Giro d’Italia so this is a pretty huge day for Irish cycling.
