After starting out the UCI World Championships with a win in the Individual Pursuit, USA’s Sarah Hammer finished off the 5 days of competition by grabbing a World Champion title in the Omnium. Some could consider this Omnium to be a rematch with Great Britain’s defending World Champ Laura Trott who beat Hammer to the Olympic Gold medal at last year’s London Games by just one point. This is Hammer’s first World Champion title in the Omnium, her second World Champion title of this year and her sixth World Champion title overall.

The only athlete representing USA in Minsk this week won her fifth World Champion title yesterday and made it look all too easy by catching her opponent, Australia’s Amy Cure, in the women’s Individual Pursuit final. Find the rest of yesterday’s results HERE.

I really wanted to see this live but UCI has failed us yet again after promising WORLDWIDE broadcast on their YouTube channel only to have it it geo-blocked in several countries. So I’ve been turning my attention towards for swift recaps and photos.

Sarah Hammer will also be contesting the Omnium and Scratch Race this week. FULL SCHEDULE HERE.

A six-race event which is contested over two days and includes mass-start racing as well as time trials. This Omnium was certainly a close call with USA’s Sarah Hammer and Great Britain’s Laura Trott tied in points at the end of the first day. For the last three races, Hammer and Trott were neck and neck — leapfrogging each other by a single point in the standings.

In the final race, the twenty-year old Laura Trott rode the fastest 500m Time Trial and Sarah Hammer (who rode the fastest 3000m Time Trial) got the 4th fastest time. In the final standings, Trott won the Gold medal over Hammer by two points. A very close one indeed.

GOLD — Great Britain (Laura Trott)
SILVER — United States (Sarah Hammer)
BRONZE — Australia (Annette Edmondson)

Shaun Wallace sent me his Go Pro footage from the Tuesday Night Races at San Diego Velodrome last week. This is the A-Category Ten-Mile Scratch which makes for a long-winded video. But it’s still a treat to watch such a swift field which includes Junior World Champion Jen Valente, track super star Sarah Hammer and former British Olympian Shaun Wallace (the man behind the camera). For those that can’t stand to watch 24 minutes of racing, fast forward to 20:25 for the final three laps.

The racing down at San Diego Velodrome is absolutely top notch. The racers, organizers and of course the spectators all bring so much energy to the track and always makes me envious that they have such a great scene. Stop by to check out some Tuesday Night Races tonight (or any Tuesday) and don’t miss out on the Saturday Night Lights USAC racing series later this month.

One of my favorite YouTube users — who has been dormant for about a year now — just started uploading videos from the World Champs. Nice!

So without further ado, here’s Sarah Hammer (USA) and Alison Shanks (New Zealand) facing off in the dramatic women’s Individual Pursuit final. Congratulations, Sarah!

While Azizulhasni Awang crossing the finish line with a seven-inch spike through his leg was the talk of the Manchester Track World Cup a couple weeks ago, Sarah Hammer's victory in the Women's Omnium was probably the most brilliant performance of the entire event.

Just watch her lay down the “hammer” (get it?) in the last four laps of the Scratch Race. Amazing!

Sarah Hammer has so many National Champion titles, she’s lost count! Here she is chatting about her win in the Women’s Omnium at Elite Nats. Bobby Lea won the Men’s Omnium.
