WOLRD CHAMPS: SARAH HAMMER HAMMERS AGAIN

The only athlete representing USA in Minsk this week won her fifth World Champion title yesterday and made it look all too easy by catching her opponent, Australia’s Amy Cure, in the women’s Individual Pursuit final. Find the rest of yesterday’s results HERE.

I really wanted to see this live but UCI has failed us yet again after promising WORLDWIDE broadcast on their YouTube channel only to have it it geo-blocked in several countries. So I’ve been turning my attention towards TrackCycling.me.uk for swift recaps and photos.

Sarah Hammer will also be contesting the Omnium and Scratch Race this week. FULL SCHEDULE HERE.

ALPENROSE RACING 2011

The Northwest is finally seeing some dry nights so weekly racing at Alpenrose Velodrome is officially heating up. Last night they held a pursuit tournament for Thursday Night Racing. Tonight is sprint night for the weekly Fast Twitch Friday. Juniors and Masters will will also have a weekly race night on Tuesdays starting in June.

On top of all that, there’s all the USAC-sanctioned and annual race events coming up on the Alpenrose calendar. According to Brandon at Crossfix, “It’s shaping up to be an awesome racing season already!”
Damn I miss you, Portland.

WORLD CHAMPS - WOMEN’S INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT

One of my favorite YouTube users — who has been dormant for about a year now — just started uploading videos from the World Champs. Nice!

So without further ado, here’s Sarah Hammer (USA) and Alison Shanks (New Zealand) facing off in the dramatic women’s Individual Pursuit final. Congratulations, Sarah!

See more World Champs replays here.

GERAINT THOMAS PURSUIT

I can already tell there’s going to be tons of media coming out of the Track World Cup in Manchester. This shot by Tom Jenkins is one of my favorite images so far: Britain’s Geraint Thomas riding the qualifying round for the Men’s Individual Pursuit.

See some more photos at The Guardian.

BOBRIDGE BREAKS BOARDMAN’S UNBREAKABLE 4000m RECORD

Amazing news! Twenty-one year old Jack Bobridge has smashed Chris Boardman’s “unbeatable” record time in the 4000-meter Individual Pursuit at Dunc Gray Velodrome during the Australian National Chamionships — setting a new World Record time of 4:10.534.

Chris Boardman’s previous record was set in fifteen years ago in 1996 at 4:11.114 — however it is not recognized by the UCI as Boardman had used the now-banned Superman position to achieve it (see pic below). So for fifteen years, Boardman’s unattainable super-record has stood. Up until today, the closest anyone had to Boardman’s time was Bobridge’s previous World Record timing at 4:14.427 set last year (ironically, that time was also beaten today at Australian Nationals). That’s four seconds outside the margin set today!

So if Chris Boardman was Superman, then I guess that means Jack Bobridge is Kryptonite. Big congratulations, Jackie! Amazing.

The only shame with this news is that the Individual Pursuit event has recently been removed from the Olympic and consequentially is barely even competed at World Cup events this year. Does that mean Jack Bobridge might be the final Individual Pursuit World Record holder?

Read more about Bobridge’s reactions to his new World Record at Cycling News.

1993 World Championships - Women’s Individual Pursuit

USA’s Rebecca Twigg takes on Marion Clignet from France. Great race from my collection!

Interesting note: Marion Clignet is actually American-born. She was barred from the USA cycling team in 1990 when she was diagnosed with epilepsy.

1993 World Championships - Men’s Individual Pursuit

Here’s something I uploaded for you to enjoy while I take off for the weekend. Graeme Obree, Chris Boardman and Philippe Ermenault all compete in this historic Individual Pursuit tournament. Obree is riding his infamous home-made bike, Old Faithful before UCI had a chance to make it illegal. Oh and the World Record is broken three times!

Hanan Alves-Hyde bringing the Hellfire!

My favorite shot (by Pat Benson) from the SCNCA Elite Championships this past weekend at LA Velodrome. Yeah I know Prolly blogged about this earlier today but I like this photo better. Heh heh.

Beaver, Rob and I had a good time on Saturday watching the Keirins and the Individual Pursuits (the Keirin tournament was just a wee little bit more exciting). Wish I coulda watched the Sunday action too but I went down to race the San Diego Cup instead. More about that later…

See more SCNCA Championship shots here. Results will be posted here (all I know right now is Kit Karzen won the Omnium).

Congrats too all the 2010 State Champions!

Gotta love those Euro innovations. The pursuit bike used to be such an open platform before UCI cracked down on the technology. This Takhion is a pretty mild (but still awesome) example of where the Eastern Europeans were going with pursuit bikes.
