THIS WEEKEND AT DORAIS PARK VELODROME
The 2011 Velo-City Tour kicks off in Detroit with the Thundrdrome II event. Bicycle messengers will be competing to go to the finals in NYC and a chance to compete in the Cycle Messenger World Championships in Warsaw.
Of course there will also be non-messenger bike races, scooter races, moped races and tons of fun for spectators. Check out the event details at the Thunderdrome website.
Beautiful video about the construction of the Dorais Velodrome by the Wolverine Sports Club along with the ABLA National Cycling Championships in July 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon for the first manned lunar landing.
I really hope we continue to see some community interest in bringing back this velodrome.

…and the Thunderdrome video!
Looks like this event was F’N AWESOME. Here’s what the organizers say:
« It’s impossible to put into words how great Thunderdrome 2010 turned out. The weather was amazing, the turnout was fantastic, the crowds really got into it and everyone had a great time. Racing was intense and despite a couple of crashes nobody was injured and all participants had fun. Thanks to everyone who came out, to our vendors, sponsors, the city of Detroit, the spectators and all the racers. We’re already hard at work putting together events for next year and we’ll keep you posted. Until then, check out this sweet video put together from Saturday’s festivities. »
I seriously love what is going on in Detroit right now. The community is really coming together to get the Dorais Velodrome back on track for the grass roots race series — Thunderdrome. Hogpath recently chatted with Andy Didorosi about the idea and beginning of the race during a tour of the park.
The first Thunderdrome event is happening Oct 16th and will included races for mopeds, scooters, mountain bikes and road bikes.
