TONIGHT AT ENCINO VELODROME

The Ride Of Silence is a worldwide bicycle ride to commemorate cyclists who have been killed or injured. The annual event intends to raise awareness as well as nurture a sense of solidarity among bike riders. If you have lost someone or know someone who has been injured on a bicycle, it’s important to pay respects and pray that the staggering numbers of cycling fatalities and injuries goes down.

Tonight we will be starting the Intro To Track Racing session with 40 laps around Encino Velodrome ridden in silence as a group to honor our fallen riders. The ride will start promptly at 7pm. Please join us.

BICI COCINA SEEKS PERMANENT SHELTER

…and you can help!

Bicycle Kitchen, Los Angeles’ treasured, community-run, non-profit bike co-op (and arguably the root of all contemporary bicycle culture in L.A.), is buying a permanent home but they need our donations to make it happen. This fundraiser has been going on for the past couple weeks and I spaced on posting it. With five days left to reach their $30,000 goal, we’re running out of time — so here’s the short version of the video.

DONATE FIRST! And then you can go ahead and check the long version.

REALITY SUCKS

Stop pedaling… start driving! Maybe I’m doing exactly what GM wants by posting this ad but it’s just too funny not to post it. I think this professor at UCLA sums it up with his reaction after seeing the ad printed in The Daily Bruin:

« Not only has GM violated the norms of decency with the use of this crudity in a student newspaper, UCLA’s Daily Bruin, it has violated the decency and courtesy appropriate of a debtor. GM, the company that required us taxpayers to bail it out in 2009, is now biting the young people who bear and will bear the environment and health damage of its gas swilling ways. While every driver in LA knows that the reality which truly “sucks” is the grid-locked, car-loaded, obesity-enhancing, stress-generating car-toxicity of simple commuting in this region. The company that helped destroy public transit in Los Angeles is now running a campaign to convince students who travel by environment-, fitness-, and efficiency-friendly bicycles that they are inferior to those who travel in highly discounted mini-trucks. Shameless, isn’t it? »

TOMORROW MORNING IN LOS ANGELES

It’s not a great time for city cyclists right now. One of my favorite bike blogs — BikingInLA — has been reporting at least one fatal hit and run pretty much every week since the beginning of the year.

We could really use all the help we can get — which is why The Good Samaritan Hospital of Los Angeles is hosting their annual Blessing Of The Bicycles tomorrow morning. Please stop by, have some breakfast, get a free bike check and have your bike blessed.

Blessings are from 8am to 9:30am. More details HERE.
