The first day of competition at the World Championships was a good warm-up for what’s to come. Tomorrow’s schedule features events that have each had new World Records set within the past year. Will records fall again?
Women’s Team Pursuit » Australia are the reigning World Champions in this event but if anyone can tear that title away from them it’s Sarah Hammer and the USA team who set a new World Record in this event during the Pan American Games in Mexico last year.
Women’s Team Sprint » Australia’s Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch set a new World Record at last year’s World Championships. They are the undisputed queens of the Team Sprint and the real question isn’t whether or not they’ll keep their stripes but if they’ll set a new World Record tomorrow.
Men’s Individual Pursuit » Last year’s World Champ Taylor Phinney (USA) is too busy with his road career to play around on the track. You can thank the International Olympic Committee and UCI for removing the Individual Pursuit from the Olympics program but that doesn’t mean this event has come to a stand-still by any means. Jack Bobridge (Australia) made huge headlines last month when he smashed the ultimate IP World Record and broke Chris Boardman’s 1996 Superman position record. Can anyone top that?
