I’ve been hearing rumors about this but today it’s been confirmed by USA Cycling. British Olympian Jamie Staff has been hired to manage USA’s track sprinting team.
Staff is an Olympic gold medalist and a former World Champion in both track and BMX cycling events and now he will be a key figure in earning USA one of the 8 spots in the new Match Sprint tournament for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Staff and the USA team are set to begin training the new sprint program at LA Velodrome in July.
“I’d be very sad to see the Edinburgh velodrome disappear and not be replaced… It’s not just about producing champions in the future. It’s about getting kids on bikes and having fun, being healthy and making the most of it.”—Chris Hoy on his hometown velodrome at Meadowbank Stadium which is under threat of being sold for property development by the City of Edinburgh.
This is the track that Hoy started riding on when he was a kid as well as Craig McLean. Who knows who will be the next champion to come out of that track… Maybe one of the kids above who competed in the recent West of Scotland Cycling Association track Championships and Youth Omnium?
Hoy has been on the campaign to save Meadowbank for a few years. Find out how to help save this velodrome here.
The IOC finally awarded Gold Medals to the winners of the Team Cycle Race from the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. The event included cumulative results from two road races and four track races. While judges were calculating the winners at the end of the final 194-kilometer race, the winning Belgian team just hopped on the bus and took off. At the time, Eugene Van Roosbroeck (now 82 years old, pictured above) and his two teammates — Lode Wouters (now 81) Leon De Lathouwer (now deceased) — had no idea that they had won.
“It was only afterwards that we heard we were the best team. None of us thought that there was a medal awarded for the team event,” says Roosbroeck. “The honor was enough for us.”
I’m not sure why it took so long for them to get their medals but you can read the full article at VeloNews.
