I’ve been developing a track racing clinic with Jared Thayn from Encino Velodrome and for the past month, every Wednesday night, we’ve been running a four-week version of the six-week course. We’ve had a great turnout with about 22 students and I want to thank all of them for coming out! It’s been a great time and I think everyone is having fun learning about different events, tactics and of course racing.
The course is basically an introduction to track racing events directed at those who’ve ridden on the velodrome before but aren’t exactly sure what they’re doing on race days. It also makes a great program just to practice racing so we have folks of all different experience levels from riders fresh out of the beginner class to Cat 2 racers from T-Town. I’ll keep you updated as to when we are starting the course again and how to register.
The session will be closed to riders who haven’t been taking the Wednesday-night course so far -BUT- we’ll be having a BBQ and giving out prizes and having a good time. So come out and cheer on the riders and bring something to throw on the grill! The Valley Bikery will also be hosting a bike repair clinic on the infield so bring anything that needs fixing. The session starts at 7:30pm and will go until about 10:30pm.
[Click on any photo to see it big] So I’ve finally got my Masi 3V all built up and I couldn’t be happier. I’m so excited about it! I’ve already ridden the bike a few times up at Encino Velodrome and but this past weekend I raced it around the planks at LA Velodrome. Super-stiff! Super-fast! Fits me so much better than my previous bike. I find that I’m working much less to keep a good speed up which is the whole point, right?
The Masi 3V design is pretty much the first frame to use oversized tubing and internal lugs. It was developed by Alberto Masi in the early 80’s and he still swears by this construction method to this day (but under a different name). I’m not saying this bike is completely flawless or anything (it’s kinda heavy) but it’s a great example of a timeless and innovative design.
I wanted to do this frame justice by giving it a contemporary build but keeping a classic feel. I think I may have succeeded but I would love to hear your feedback so leave me a comment if you got something to say. Here’s the deetz:
British cycling legend Chris Boardman recently gave his world-famous Lotus superbike (rebranded as Eddy Merckx) to the new Museum Of Liverpool. This is the bike that Boardman smashed the Hour Record with in 1996.
Along with the bike, Boardman is also handing over a piece of the Manchester Velodrome track (given to him when they resurfaced the track in 2007) and a Yellow Jersey from the 1994 Tour De France.

Time for a little treat for the weekend. American Flyers is probably my favorite bike racing movie. I mean I love Breaking Away just as much as the next guy but this year I’ve been watching Am Flyers a lot and I’m really beginning to appreciate just how awesome it is. It really gets me hyped a few days before a race… Especially cuz of the score by Lee Ritenour and Greg Mathieson. I’ve been trying to get a copy of the score for a long time now and earlier this week I scored! I happened upon a mint condition LP of the soundtrack while digging through the crates at Record Surplus for $2.50!
You’ll be hearing some more of this soundtrack next week as a part of something that my friend Chriz G and I are putting together. For now, hit play on the embedded MP3 above to hear one of the tracks that really gets me into it. Right around 3:15 is where it really takes off. Disclaimer: this is recorded straight off my vinyl copy so don’t be alarmed by the record crackle.
